Young Umpires

Hampshire Player Pathwyay is extending an invitation to up to 30 U16 and U17 DC players to apply for a position on our Young Umpire Development Programme

Hockey simply couldn't run without umpires. At every level, from local clubs to international arenas, they're the backbone of the game, always on the pitch from start to finish.

No matter your age, skill level, or experience in playing hockey, if you love the sport, consider becoming an umpire.

Hampshire Hockey Player Pathway is passionate about promoting and advancing hockey umpiring in Hampshire. Through the Hampshire PP Young Umpire Development Programme, we aim to inspire young players of all genders and ethnic backgrounds to take up umpiring and to elevate the role's stature within the sport.

Being an umpire is incredibly fulfilling. It's about ensuring fair play and helping everyone enjoy their time on the pitch.

Interested in trying your hand at umpiring? Here’s your chance to receive both theoretical and hands-on training in a relaxed, stress-free environment. It’s a great way to become the umpire you aspire to be.

The Hampshire PP Young Umpire Development Programme

Here is how it works:

We are looking for up to 30  boys and girls (15 of each) who care so much about our sport, that they want to support it by becoming a qualified umpire. Becoming an umpire will not only help you become a better player, but also a great team player and club member. Because once you have finished playing your game, maybe you can stay behind and umpire another game to help out your club. It is no secret that umpires are in short supply so you will be in great demand but, more than thatat, you will be doing your bit to help our sport and encourage others to do the same!

There are only 30 spaces on the course in total so it is first come, first serve. To apply, follow the 3 steps below:

Please start by checking the dates.

  1. The online theory course: Introduction to Umpiring, run by England Hockey, is on 28 June 2024 from 18:30-20:00pm

Ask a parent or guardian to fill in the form below. Once your form is received, you will get an email from us in a day or two, with a link to sign up to the England Hockey course. Using that link, you will be asked to create a profile on the Hockey Hub if you don't already have one.

We will be supplying you with an Umpire shirt to use for the day, so please make sure you add your preferred size on the form.

Get ready!

Start by looking at how other umpires do things in any games you may be playing between now and 28 June. On the match day, you will be supported by Umpire Coaches from South Central Umpiring who will show you what to do, and stay with you on pitch to help you make the right decisions. It doesn't take long to to feel confortable being an umpire, but I  can't pretend it won't be a little bit scary the first time you step out on the pitch. But with the course you'll be doing and with the support of the umpire coaches, and the chance to talk through the games with them, it won't be long before you'll be blowing that whistle with confidence.

Hampshire PP will provide you on the day with an umpire wallet that has a whistle, a score pad and cards which you can keep afterwards.

We will also provide free food and drink for you on the match days, as long as you have your umpiring shirt on!
